1. SECOND VARIETY
   Synopsis
   Second Variety is a science fiction short story about self-replicating robots written, by Philip Kindred Dick, an American Author who contributed to science fiction genre of literary world with his works such as The Man in the High Castle, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said, A Scanner Darkly and Second Variety to name a few.
   This novel is set on the times of nuclear war between West and Soviet Union. The dangers of nuclear war are realized by both sides only after endless loss of human life. While Soviet Union was having an upper hand in the war, key people of UN forces flee to moon base and their engineers develop fighting robots called “Claws”, which can replicate themselves without human insight. Six years passed, the claws destroyed Soviet forces and start redesigns themselves, which even UN forces not aware of it.
   In the preceding incidents narrate that the “Claws” have powered themselves to the extent which no longer human can control them. In fact the story end lines states that “Claws” started developing weapons to kill other “Claws”

2.THE VARIABLE MAN
Synopsis
The Variable Man is a science fiction short story written by Philip Kindred Dick, an American novelist remembered for his science fiction stories such as The Man in the High Castle, Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and A Scanner Darkly.
A war is about to break between Centaurian Empire and Terra which is blocked into Centaurian system. Both doing advance researches to destroy the opponent with latest technologies. As they continue to predict the result, actual fight is yet to start. Terra is succeeding in creating a deadly weapon named Icarus, which can travel faster than light and destroy the entire Centaurian Empire. While they are about fire, it is not working.
In an accidental research they could bring a man from the past the variable man Thomas Cole. Terra believes he can support them in fixing Icarus, as he is a man of past and has certain genius in him. Finally the variable man fixes Icarus and it was fired. In contrast to the expectations, it exploded and caused severe damages to Terra, though the unpredictable also happened. It travelled faster than light, thus travel beyond the Centaurian Empire's perimeter and Terra is now no more part of the tine system of Centaurian, thus no need of war.

3. THE DEFENDERS
   Synopsis
   The Defenders is a short story written by American science fiction novelist Philip K. Dick, who later expanded this as a novel. The Defenders narrates how the war robots deviate from the very purpose of their creation and change the war hungry humans to move towards peace.
   Nuclear war is fought between United States and the Soviet Union for the past eight years. Both countries create giant bunkers underground and sheltered inside safely, while the fighting continued in the destroyed surface with the help of “leadys”, which are radioactivity-immune robots. The progress of the war is transmitted by the robots only as the battle field is too harmful for humans to visit.
   A war planner, Taylor has been assigned to interrogate the leadys, which were trying their best to avoid humans visit the battlefield. Taylor and team bypass the leadys and witness the surface. To their surface the weapons of both sides were destroyed by the robots, and all robots were busy in rebuilding the destroyed surface and sending fabricated photographs to the humans to fool them. The story end up in a good note of leadys convinces the human to stop war and get along in a peaceful world.

4. MR. SPACESHIP
   Synopsis
   Mr. Spaceship is a science fiction story written by Philip K. Dick, an American author and who had influential works on science fiction genre with his popular novel and short stories such as The Man in the High Castle, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, A Scanner Darkly, Second Variety, The Variable Man, The Defenders, The Skull and The Crystal Crypt.
   In a distant future war broke up with human race and an alien race called Yuks. Yuks use life-form weapons which cannot be combated by human race. Philip Kramer had been assigned to find a solution to this problem, and a space ship has been designed to be controlled by human brain. Philip’s professor on his deathbed volunteer to donate his brain to be used in the space ship.
   When their new invention started operating, the ship was beyond Philip’s control as the professor’s brain taken the control over human race. To avoid the damages Philip flee the space ship out of space orbit. After few days, the space ship returns to earth and kidnap Philip and his family. While they were traveling on board, received a message from the professor’s brain that Earth is no more a safe place to live and they have been taken to a new planet where they can start a fresh colonize.

5. THE SKULL
   Synopsis
   The Skull is a time travel short story written by the well known science fiction writer Philip K. Dick, remembered for his numerous short stories and novels such as The Man in the High Castle, Second Variety, The Broken Bubble, and Confessions of a Crap Artist.
   The skull narrates the story of the protagonist Conger, who is imprisoned now has been given an option to bailout on a mission of killing a man by traveling back in time. The targeted person’s skull is given for identification, with a note stating he would change the world for next few hundred years by his new religious movement. While Conger waits for the arrival, he was shocked to witness that the skull was his own and he had been asked to kill him. However he realizes that even though his death will not be and end, as another version of him will reappear.

6. THE CRYSTAL CRYPT
   Synopsis
   The Crystal Crypt is a science fiction story written by American novelist Philip Kindred Dick, remembered for whose numerous contribution to science fiction genre by novels and short stories.
   This short story is sent in the future during an inevitable war to explode between Earth and Mars. Martians believed that a 3 member team of earth has destroyed a Martian city and the remains of the city could not be traced. A space ship leaves from Mars to earth and a business man on board Thacher is on casual chat with the other passenger about the destroyed Martian city.
   Two men and a woman briefs Thacher that, they had been searched by Martians for the destruction. Also thee reveal to Thacher that, the actually did not destroy the city, but using a special device the Martian city has been transformed to a tiny globe chip which is being carried away by them now in the spaceship. Thacher smiles at them and reveals that he is a Martian secret agent and many of the passengers on board are Martian police.

7. BEYOND LIES THE WUB
   Synopsis
   Beyond Lies the Wub is a science fiction short story written by Philip Dick which narrates the incidents inside a space travel. Inspite of weight constraints and stiff opposition from Captain Franco, Peterson bought a pig like creature for its taste of food. During the travel they were surprised to know the creature named Wub is capable of mind control and telepathy and wins the hearts of crew members thus is not killed for food. The story ends up in the typical author's twist.

8. PIPER IN THE WOODS
   Synopsis
   Philip K Dick 's Piper in the Woods opens up with Doctor Henry Harris treating a soldier returned from war field. He was shocked to hear when the soldier claims he is a plant. To find the truth, he travels to asteroid and found many soldiers were claiming as plants. He realizes the soldiers were started feeling peace, when they start to think themselves as plants. Henry returns from the asteroid and goes to bed, just like a plant.

9. THE GUN
   Synopsis
   Philip K Dick's The Gun is a science fiction short story. A group of space explorers were shot by a gun which was eructed in a remains of an ancient city. The explorers crash-land and destroy the gun found in the ancient city. After they left, the Gun was rebuilt again by automated machines and eruct it with nuclear weapons.

10. TONY AND THE BEETLES
    Synopsis
    Tony and the Beetles takes place far in the future when Earth's enormous colonial empire is well established but the question is, how long can it last? 10 year old Tony grows up fast when history catches up with the human race. A sobering look at human history .. and our probable future. Two very different stories but both entertaining. (Summary by the magazine editor and Phil Chenevert)

11. THE EYES HAVE IT
    Synopsis
    Philip K Dick's space science fiction The Eyes Have It narrates what would happen when Aliens invading the earth and mimicking human beings with their one celled creatures. A fun packed whimsical story is a thrilling read for any science fiction lover.
