ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jane Austen was born on 16 December 1775 and has become one of the most widely read authors of romantic literary fiction in the English language. Not only has she brought delight to readers of all ages over the last two centuries, but her social observation and witty commentary have become of great interest to academics and historians.

Austen was educated by her father and her elder brothers as she grew up within a close family on the periphery of the English landed gentry. Her family were her greatest support and they encouraged her writing, which enabled to experiment with voice and form, helping her to develop the literary style. During her lifetime Austen published four novels, Sense and Sensibility in 1811, Pride and Prejudice in 1813, Mansfield Park in 1814 and Emma in 1816.

Jane Austen died on 18 July 1817 at the age of forty-one. She had completed two other manuscripts, which were published posthumously, in 1818, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. She had started work on a seventh novel, Sanditon, but passed away before she could complete the manuscript.

This eBook brings together three of her novels in a single volume, which are certain to provide any reader with hours of delight and pleasure, as they enjoy her literary style, humour and observation of early 17th century English society.

Sense and Sensibility

The romantic Sense and Sensibility was Jane Austen’s first book to be published and came out in 1811 under the name “A Lady”. Jane Austen was just 19 years-of-age when she wrote the first draft in 1795. Originally the manuscript was written as a series of letters and was called Elinor and Marianne. In later drafts Austen changed he manuscript to the narrative form and retitled the book Sense and Sensibility.

Sense and Sensibility is one of Austen’s most endearing books and is certainly one of the most famous titles in English literature. The book is a comedy of manners and tells of the life and loves of sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, who find that they have to move home and settle into a small cottage on a relative’s estate. The story is set in southwest England and takes place between 1792 and 1797, during which time the sisters find love, romance and eventually heartbreak.

Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice was first published in 1813. Despite now celebrating its bi-centenary the book continues to very popular with modern readers and to-date has sold over 20 million copies.

Pride and Prejudice tells the story of Elizabeth Bennet, the second of five daughters of a country gentleman who live together in comfort in the fictional town of Meryton, near London. Pride and Prejudice provides an enduringly popular insight into the social highs and lows of love, marriage, manners, morality and social standing in early 19th century rural England.

Northanger Abbey

Northanger Abbey tells the story of Catherine Morland, a seventeen-year-old girl with a passion for Gothic novels, and her family friends, Mr. and Mrs. Allen, as they visit Bath for the first time. Catherine quickly makes new friends, including Isabella Thorpe and Eleanor Tilney. Catherine is pursued by Eleanor’s brother, the ill-mannered John Thorpe, but her true affection lies with Eleanor’s younger brother, the dashing Henry Tilney, who captivates her with his love of literature. The story takes a dramatic turn when Henry’s father, General Tilney, invites Catherine to visit their country home, Northanger Abbey.

Originally published in December 1817 by John Murray, Northanger Abbey was actually Jane Austen’s first novel to be completed for publication. The book was originally entitled Susan and was written around 1799. Austen sold the manuscript to the London publisher, Crosby & Co., for £10 in 1803, but the company decided against publishing it. Austen’s brother, Henry, bought the manuscript back from the publisher in 1816 for the same sum, even though, by that time, Austen had published four other highly successful novels. Austen updated her manuscript, changing the lead character’s name from Susan to Catherine and renaming the book, Northanger Abbey. Jane Austen passed away in July 1817 and her brother arranged for Northanger Abbey to be published posthumously in December 1817.
