古諾的【浮士德】是法語浪漫華麗歌劇的核心劇目，其中的浮士德一角更是所有想要成為巨星的低男中音歌唱家必備的曲碼，從俄國男低音夏里亞平開始，幾乎每一代的低男中音，沒有不以稱霸此劇為號召的。這份以威爾斯國家歌劇院演出班底為卡司的錄音，雖然沒有一位歌手是法國人，但是卻因為錄下了一代美國低男中音山繆拉美的精彩浮士德演唱，而成為九零年代最重要的浮士德錄音之一。拉美被稱為「當代三魔」的不二人選，這三魔都是以歌德的浮士德所寫成的音樂作品，分別是波易托的【魔鬼梅菲斯托】、本劇和白遼士的【浮士德的天譴】，三劇中他都以演唱誘惑浮士德魔鬼梅菲斯特出色而聞名。更因為唱這三個角色聞名，他在一九九六年還在紐約艾佛利費雪（Avery Fisher）廳開了一個名為「與魔鬼的約會」的獨唱會，當中他就唱了這三劇中魔鬼所演唱的十四首男中音詠嘆調，因此獨步當代樂壇，這套曲目他一連唱了五年，還被唱片公司錄下現場發行，由此可見他演唱魔鬼一角的成功。
